Here's a good article about Amazon's Search Inside the Book feature when it first came out a few years ago: http://www.wired.com/news/print/0,1294,60948,00.html.
The writer makes some very good points about a) how up till then physical books were a black spot of information off the internet, all that information lost in those pages which aren't web-pages, and b) that it never would have worked if people wanted books in digital form - but they don't, they just want to use the search-inside as an index to find more books: "The magic of the archive lies in the assumption that physical books are irreplaceable. The electronic text is simply an enhancement of the physical object."
